Definition

The process of progressive structural damage occurring in a material subjected to cyclic or fluctuating stresses, where failure typically initiates at stress levels significantly below the material's yield strength; the mechanism consists of three distinct stages: crack initiation (nucleation), crack propagation (growth through the microstructure), and final fracture (sudden catastrophic failure once the remaining cross-section can no longer support the load).

This should state that fatigue failure occurs below the material's yield strength, and mention crack initiation, propagation, and final fracture as the three stages.
